Detectives should always have a periscope around. You need to have one around to peek over walls or around corners, without revealing yourself. This can be made very easily, especially in a pinch. I just read on Wikipedia that mirrors are like glass with different metals like tin, silver, and copper painted on the back to make them reflective.
A periscope works by bouncing a reflection over 2 mirrors. The angle of each mirror has to be perfect. Start the lids at 45 degrees, which is half of a 90-degree right angle. The corner of this book is a perfect example of a 90-degree right angle. Then each lid might need to be tweaked to ensure the reflection is pointed the right way.

Materials:
* Empty cereal box (milk carton, small box, or something similar can work too)
* 2 makeup compact mirrors $ (These seem to be the easiest and cheapest, but any mirror will work. Don’t try and break a mirror in half. They’re made from glass and will cut you. Also, there are plastic mirrors found in cheap Dollar Store toys. They’re safer, but harder to find.)

Steps:

1. Open all of the flaps on the cereal box.
2. Cut off the front flap on the top and the back flap on the bottom.
3. The side flaps should be cut at a 45-degree angle to make a triangle. Make sure you do this so that the front and back flaps can be taped to the side flaps and held at a 45-degree angle. Double check that you can do this before you cut.
4. Glue your mirrors to each open flap.
5. Look through one flap to test your periscope out. You might need to tweak the mirrors at different angles on the flaps so it
works better. The mirror angles can easily be set at any angle. If you cut off both the flaps on one side, you can make a periscope to look behind yourself.
